More Textiles

IMG_0946 IMG_0945 IMG_0944 IMG_0943 Developing fine motor coordination has been a big focus and what better way than sewing, weaving, wrapping and tying.

Grade 1 and 2 created delightful pocket pals. They stitched onto the hessian and decorated with beads and buttons.

Next the students had to design and cover their pals and the finished pieces are beautiful. The students could explain why it was important to develop these skills and when they might use them.

Grade 3 produced some terrific woven trees combing a number of steps and skills. There was quite a lot of problem solving involved. We discussed what skills we were developing and how we could build on these skills in the future.

Textile Fun

IMG_0935 IMG_0936 IMG_0937 IMG_0938 Third term is usually textile time and the grade 4s have been working hard to create felt Vikings. some are finished and other have finishing touches still to do. We will end up with close to 100 Vikings, what a sight!

Grade 5 have been decorating and sewing cup cakes which make a real feast for the eye when displayed together. Some of the keen sewers have put quite a lot of detail into the decorations.

These cup cakes look good enough to eat!

Enjoy!

mini artist books

This has been a huge project for grade 3. We started by painting and stencilling a sheet of paper and then designed 8 pictures to work with their individual themes.

Next was making the book which took lots of folding and some cutting and then added a cover to the book which measure approx. 8cm by 11cm when closed. So we were working quite small.

Then the hard work began cutting and pasting their pictures into the book.

It has taken a few session but we have some awesome artist books.

Topics included; in the garden, Melbourne, solar system, bugs and natural disasters.

Lost Thing by Shaun Tan and Grade 6

IMG_0907IMG_0906We have a few samples of Grade 6 art work based on the illustrations of Shaun Tan’s ‘Lost Thing’.

I think the students have done a great job on these project.

Initially they were tho think of something that is easily lost and sketch up their idea. When they were happy this was transferred to card and completed in colour and cut out.

For the backgrounds they had a large selection of papers to use but had to think about conveying a sense of feeling in their art work with the colours they selected.

Finally they made a paint scrape piece to use as a second background.

IMG_0905I think the student’s work is fantastic.IMG_0904IMG_0901IMG_0899IMG_0900IMG_0898IMG_0902

What’s new?

IMG_0877Here we have a few dolls created by the art extension group that meet Friday afternoons. The students created a no sew doll by making a wire frame, wrapping this with wadding and then covering the framework with fabrics, ribbons, leather and wool.

Paper craft skills

IMG_0874 IMG_0873 IMG_0872 Students all over the school are working on some variation of paper craft skills.

Great for fine motor development, technology skills and thinking creatively these projects have been designed to enable students to develop skills in joining, folding, cutting, making movable parts and 3d work.

These kind of activities also develop language skills as the students love to make up a story about their work.

Here are a few samples from grade 1 and 2.

You will see this work all over the school!

Enjoy.IMG_0871

Australian Artist Grace Cossington Smith

IMG_0870 IMG_0869 Grade 4 students have been busy looking at art works of Sydney Harbour. They have used the painting technique of Australian artist Grace Cossington Smith to create their own stunning paintings.

Students were only allowed 2 or 3 colours plus white and were amazed at the myriad of colours and shades they could create.

Some of the paintings started to look like beautiful Persian rugs and some become almost abstract.

I will post more pics soon.IMG_0868

Insects

IMG_0856 IMG_0857 IMG_0858 Grade 3 have made some fantastic insects using dyes, rock salt and paint.

Firstly they drew 3 body parts for their insect design.

Next they painted the body and then very carefully painted dye around the edge. Rock salt was placed on top of the dye which draws the moisture up and makes wonderful patterns in the dye.

Once it was all dry the students made marks to decorate their insects.

Check them out in the school passage. They make a colourful display.

Great work grade 3.
